Chantell got a UTT bursary to study for a BSc degree in Applied Geology and an MSc in Petroleum Geology at the University of the Western Cape (2000-2006). From March 2008 she will do an internship at the Petroleum Agency. We asked Chantell a few questions. Was it easy to get the bursary? Good results in my first year ensured me a good chance to get the bursary. How did you hear about UTT? The applications were distributed in the department at the university. Did the bursary process run smoothly? Yes it did, the approval came through during the half of the year and the remaining fees were paid immediately. The fees that were paid by me were reimbursed with no problem. For each year that I was sponsored, the bursary provided the necessary funds without any hiccups. How do you view the future of your field of study/work?
There is a great future in petroleum geology as there is a need for geologists in South Africa. With the current economic situation regarding petroleum and other resources it is imperative that geology becomes a priority in this country.
Do you have any tips or advice for students wishing to enter this field? When choosing a field, don't look at how it can reward you financially. Choose a field that is your passion. Geology is all about loving what you do and only if you do will you truly be successful. Practical experience is the key to this field so choose a university/college which will give you ample practical experience.
